Five doors to kindness · the gentle door · in films
The Illusion of the Other, in films
Read the book, or watch it. Eleven films, 14 min 26 s in all, in G’s voice.
One film for the Artist’s Note and one for each of the ten chapters. Each is a minute or so. Under every film, the chapter in a few sentences, and the way to the chapter itself. Watch them one after another and you have been through the whole book in a quarter of an hour. Or read the book, and come here for the pictures.
Sound on. They are the same films as on TikTok and YouTube. Here they stand with their chapters.

The gentle door
The first book. It was written because one question would not leave: are we really separate? One assumption does the damage. It shows in cruelty and it shows in indifference. This book stands on its own. No physics. No equations. The gentle door.
The film. Two people, and a line drawn between them. A reader on a bench. A door, walked through. The four on the dunes under one sun.
We feel separate for four reasons. The body protects itself. The mind adds a narrator. Language fixes the names. The group makes it bigger. Each is useful. None is the final truth. A line in the sand is real. The sand is still one.
The film. ME, and the line between me and the rest. The question at the top of the line. A line drawn in the sand, and the dune drawn on through it.
Difference costs nothing. Distance does. When a person becomes a category, their suffering becomes information. No hatred is needed. Indifference is enough. Righteousness lets a person harm without feeling harmful.
The film. A woman walks past a man on a bench. A box is drawn around him. The side of truth is drawn under one man’s feet, and stops short of the other.
The sacred began inside the world. Then it was given a will. It commanded, it was obeyed, and it moved upward. Creator here, creation there. The cost is quiet: permission to look away. If God is everywhere, then God is not elsewhere.
The film. A red circle on the ground rises to the sky. A line is drawn under it. Then it grows until it is gone, and two men are left on the ground.
The word God has always pointed at what everything depends on. Nothing exists outside the Universe, so that role is already filled. You did not arrive in the Universe. You came out of it. No one has a special position. Cruelty does not become forbidden. It becomes confused.
The film. A woman looks up at the stars. A circle is drawn that includes her. An eye in the sky looks back. Her outline is drawn from the circle’s own line.
The world is one and looks like many. A desert is real, and so is each grain. The separation between them is not. The mistake is concluding that the grains exist apart from the desert. Treating people as separate is not only unkind. It is inaccurate.
The film. The dunes. One grain lifted out, and pulled back. A line between two people, crossed out.
A person is limited, not insignificant. One word can alter a life. Each of us is a window, not the building. From the street: many lights. Inside, one building. What you do touches others. What touches others touches the whole. And the whole includes you.
The film. A building at night. Its windows light one by one, and one line is drawn through all of them. A touch, and the ripple comes back.
You chose to keep going. Every action has causes. A person is where causes are processed and expressed in a new way. A rock has no choice. A walker can stop and turn. Freedom is responsiveness. In a connected world actions travel. A door closed in one room was decided in another.
The film. A rock rolls down the hill while a man stops and turns. Ripples from one room close the door in the next.
No rule is needed where the nature of a thing is enough. Nobody needs a rule to keep a hand out of the fire. Harm is not so much wrong as senseless: the left hand attacking the right. Cruelty is expensive. What is left is not sainthood. It is consistency.
The film. A hand pulled back from the fire. One hand striking the other, and the hurt in the hand that struck. Two people walking the same way.
Take away command and meaning does not vanish. It changes location. It is not handed down. It is built, and earned. Meaning shows up wherever impact exists. A forest floor after a fire is where new things grow. There is no audience above. You act carefully out of understanding, not fear.
The film. A red circle comes down from the sky to the ground between an adult and a child. A clearing. A flower. An empty sky.
Difference remains. Distance dissolves. You can listen without surrender, act firmly without hatred, set boundaries without contempt. Hatred needs distance, and fades when the distance is gone. The grains are still distinct. The desert is still one. You already knew this. Now you have the words.
The film. Two people face each other. The red gap between them closes. The four on the dunes. Two palms meet.
Every film says what its chapter says, in the chapter’s own words. The words on the page and the words in the film are one text. If they ever differ, write to iam@whybekind.org.
